Nederland lies in Jefferson County in southeast Texas. Together with Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange it makes up the Golden Triangle. The ground here is almost perfectly flat, and the map shows it in long straight avenues, evenly spaced residential blocks and a railway line running through town. To the east, the city merges with Port Neches and Groves, and their street patterns run into each other without a visible break.
The town was founded at the end of the 1890s by Dutch settlers who came with the building of the Kansas City Southern railway, which explains the name. That heritage is still visible in the Dutch Windmill Museum in Tex Ritter Park, which also holds an exhibit on the country singer. The oil boom at nearby Spindletop later reshaped the whole region.
