Nirasaki lies at the northwestern edge of the Kofu Basin in Yamanashi Prefecture, where the valley narrows between high mountains. The town gathers at the tip of Shichirimen-iwa, a long cliff-edged plateau formed by a vast prehistoric debris flow from the Yatsugatake volcanoes. On a map the plateau appears as a sharp tongue of land between two river valleys, with streets and the railway threading along its foot.
The mountains dominate every view. The Southern Alps rise steeply to the west, with Hōō Sanzan and Kaikomagatake close by, while Yatsugatake closes the valley to the north, and on clear days Mount Fuji is visible as well. Nirasaki was also the site of Shinpu Castle, built by Takeda Katsuyori in the final years of the Takeda clan’s rule over Kai.

It is a home town for many, including the biochemist Satoshi Ōmura, awarded the Nobel Prize in 2015, and the print keeps its unusual geography readable at a glance.
