Odenthal is a municipality in the Bergisches Land, east of Cologne and just north of Bergisch Gladbach. On a map it has no single town centre. Instead, a chain of villages and hamlets is threaded along roads that follow the valley of the Dhünn and climb the hills around it. Patches of forest and meadow lie between them, giving the layout a loose, rural rhythm.
Its best-known landmark is the Altenberger Dom, the Gothic church of a former Cistercian abbey, which stands in a quiet stretch of the Dhünn valley. Around the old village of Odenthal the streets curl along the slope, and newer residential areas fill the gentler ground. With its winding lanes, small river and woodland, the map reads more like a landscape than a street plan.
