Olpe is the seat of its district in the southern Sauerland, a hilly and heavily forested part of North Rhine-Westphalia. The town grew where the Bigge and its side valleys meet, and on the map the streets follow those valleys. The result is an irregular, star-like shape, with roads curving to fit the slopes.
The most striking feature is water. Just to the north lies the Biggesee, one of the region's largest reservoirs, whose branching shoreline winds between the hills. Its shape, with long inlets and a crossing dam, makes an Olpe map poster unusually graphic: dense streets on one side, open water and forest on the other.
Olpe is an old Hanseatic town, and its compact centre on a slight rise still shows a medieval core within the later growth. The Sauerland motorways pass nearby, but the lasting impression from above is hills, woods and the lake.
