Onalaska sits on the east bank of the Mississippi River in western Wisconsin, directly north of La Crosse. Its map is shaped by Lake Onalaska, a wide pool of the Mississippi formed by a lock and dam, which spreads west of the city as a maze of open water, islands and backwater channels.
Behind the city rise the steep bluffs and valleys of the Driftless Area, a region untouched by the last glaciers. Neighbourhoods fill the level ground between the river and the hills, while the Black River joins from the north. The Great River State Trail, a long rail-trail, starts in Onalaska.
