Oudtshoorn lies in the Klein Karoo, a semi-arid valley between mountain ranges, and its map shows a town laid out along the Grobbelaars River. The streets form a broad, open grid, with wide roads that suit a dry landscape. Beyond the town, fields follow the river valleys, where water makes farming possible in otherwise dry country.
The town is known as the centre of ostrich farming, and in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the ostrich feather boom brought great wealth. Grand sandstone houses built during that period, often called feather palaces, still stand in the town. Ostrich farms remain part of the landscape around Oudtshoorn today.
North of the town, the Swartberg range rises steeply, with the Cango Caves in its foothills and the Swartberg Pass crossing the mountains.
