Two major highways, Route 4 and Route 17, cross near the centre, and their interchange is surrounded by very large retail sites. Beyond them, quiet residential streets form curving suburban patterns.
Paramus is known as one of the largest shopping destinations in the United States, home to several major malls including Westfield Garden State Plaza. Yet Bergen County's blue laws keep most stores closed on Sundays, which gives the borough a distinctly calm weekend character compared with its weekday traffic.
