Pāsārgād county lies in the uplands of Fars Province, north of Shiraz. Its main town sits on a broad, flat plain ringed by bare mountains. From above, the town is a neat grid of streets bordered by orchards and fields, and the plain around it is divided into long agricultural parcels that follow the lines of old water channels.
A short distance away are the ruins of Pasargadae, the capital founded by Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BC and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. His tomb, a simple stone structure on a stepped plinth, stands alone on the open ground. The palace remains are spread thinly across the plain, and on a map they read as a few faint marks.
