Postmasburg lies in the Northern Cape of South Africa, in dry country on the edge of the Kalahari. It is a mining town with a long association with iron ore and manganese. Large open-pit operations in the surrounding district have shaped the local economy and appear on maps as broad, sharply defined areas of disturbed ground.
The town has a regular street pattern, with long straight roads and generous blocks typical of South African country towns. Newer residential areas extend from the older core, some with tighter, repetitive layouts. The railway and regional roads that serve the mines run out across the flat, sparsely vegetated land in long, uninterrupted lines.
