Qaţanā lies in Rif Dimashq governorate, southwest of Damascus, toward the foothills of Mount Hermon. Its map shows a mid-sized town with an older centre of tightly packed streets and newer districts spreading outward along the main roads. Around it, farmland and orchards fill the gentle plain before the ground begins to rise toward the mountains.
The town sits in a farming area watered from the surrounding hills. On the map, the shift from dense streets to cultivated plots is easy to see, as field boundaries and irrigation lines form a fine texture around the built-up area. To the west, the higher ground of the Hermon range closes the horizon.
The older core stands out as a knot of short, irregular streets, while newer neighbourhoods follow straighter lines.
