Qianjiang is a district in the southeast of Chongqing Municipality, toward the border with Hubei. It lies in the Wuling Mountains, and the town occupies one of the few stretches of flat land in a landscape of steep, folded ridges. On a map the built-up core looks tight and elongated, held in place by slopes that leave little room to spread outward.
Until 2000 the area was governed as a Tujia and Miao autonomous county, and both communities are still part of local life. Newer road and rail links reach the town through tunnels and over viaducts, so they show up as unusually straight lines cutting across the curving contours. A Qianjiang map poster captures that contrast between engineered routes and old valley paths.
Away from the centre, the street network thins quickly into roads that follow the valleys, with small settlements strung along them.
