La mappa
Hanjia is the urban centre of Pengshui, a Miao and Tujia autonomous county in the mountainous south-east of Chongqing. From above there is almost no flat land here. The town squeezes into a narrow river valley, with streets laid along the banks and steep, wooded slopes rising on either side.
This corner of Chongqing is known for its karst mountains, gorges and rivers, and for the culture of the Miao and Tujia peoples who live here. Transport across the rugged terrain has long depended on the rivers and, more recently, on highways and tunnels cut through the hills.
A Hanjia map poster is very different from a lowland city plan. The river makes a strong, curving line through the middle of the sheet, and the streets form a thin band along it. Roads switch back up the slopes or disappear into the mountains, and the empty areas on either side make the town's position feel dramatic.
The river runs through the town between steep slopes, and its curves determine where every street, bridge and building can go.
Buildings and roads cling to narrow terraces along both banks. They form long, thin strips of development instead of a broad grid.
Routes out of town wind up the valley sides and through the surrounding hills, drawing fine, twisting lines across the empty space.

Perché Hanjia
For people from Pengshui and south-eastern Chongqing, this map captures the unusual setting of their hometown between the river and the mountains. Its dramatic contrast between water, streets and open slope makes a strong statement on the wall.
You can personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates line, and Chinese characters work for the title. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
