Râmnicu Sărat lies where the curve of the Carpathians meets the Romanian plain, and its map sits on that divide. The town grew along the river of the same name. Its main streets follow the old route between Buzău and Focșani. The centre is a compact cluster of short streets, and residential quarters spread out on level land around it.
The river runs past the town in a wide, braided bed that clearly separates built-up land from open fields. To the west the ground starts to rise toward the Subcarpathian hills. To the east the fields stretch flat toward the Bărăgan. The name refers to a salt river. The area is also remembered for the 1789 battle of Rymnik, fought on the nearby plain.
