La mappa

Rügen Map Poster & Print

Rügen is Germany's largest island. It lies off the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and has one of the most intricate outlines in Europe. Shallow lagoons, called bodden, reach deep inside it, and the land between them is linked by thin strips of sand and moraine. The result looks less like one island than a cluster of peninsulas held together by narrow necks.

In the northeast, the Jasmund peninsula rises into beech forest and white chalk cliffs. The best known is the Königsstuhl, which Caspar David Friedrich's paintings made famous. Further north, Cape Arkona marks the island's tip with lighthouses above the sea. On the southeastern coast, resort towns such as Binz line a long curving beach.

A Rügen map poster makes the island's watery structure clear. A road and rail causeway and the high Rügen Bridge connect it to Stralsund across the Strelasund. Along the beach north of Binz stands Prora, a very long seaside complex from the 1930s. It shows up on the map as a strikingly straight line beside the curve of the coast.

01

Bodden lagoons

Shallow inland waters cut through the island in every direction, creating a complex pattern of shorelines, spits and islands that fills the print with detail.

02

Jasmund chalk

The northeastern peninsula combines forest and bright chalk cliffs above the Baltic, and its national park is recognised by UNESCO for its ancient beech woods.

03

Rügen Bridge

A tall cable-stayed bridge crosses the Strelasund to Stralsund, alongside the older causeway, and forms the island's main link to the mainland.

Perché Rügen

Una mappa che ha un significato

Rügen has been a German holiday island for generations, from grandparents' summers in Binz to modern cycling trips. Its lacy, lagoon-cut outline makes a detailed and unusual print that rewards a close look.

You can edit the title, subtitle and coordinates line to name a resort, a family or a year. The print comes in Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
