Saikū lies in the town of Meiwa on the Ise plain in Mie Prefecture, between the rivers that flow down to Ise Bay. The map shows rice paddies divided into neat rectangles, village lanes following older routes and a railway line running across the flat land. The patterns are quiet and regular, with houses clustered along the roads.
The name comes from the Saikū, the palace of the Saiō. She was an imperial princess sent to serve at Ise Grand Shrine on the emperor's behalf, a tradition that lasted for centuries. Excavations have revealed a planned grid of palace grounds beneath the fields, and a history museum and a partial reconstruction now mark the site.
