La mappa

Sakaki Map Poster & Print

Sakaki lies in the Chikuma River valley in Nagano Prefecture, between Ueda and Nagano city. The valley is narrow here, and the town stretches along it lengthwise. The river, a rail line and the main roads run roughly parallel through the middle, while wooded slopes rise steeply on either side.

The town is known across Japan for its high concentration of small and medium-sized manufacturers, many of them precision engineering workshops. On the map this shows as a fine mix of houses, factory buildings and farmland packed onto the valley floor, where almost every flat piece of ground has been put to use.

A Sakaki map poster is a study in linear form. Streets run between the river and the hillsides, the Chikuma splits into channels across its gravel bed, and roads following the contours climb out toward upland villages. The result is a long, tapering composition, quite different from the round shape of a typical town.

01

Chikuma River

The Chikuma runs the length of the town in a wide bed of gravel and shifting channels. It is the backbone of the map, and almost every other line runs alongside it.

02

Valley floor

Homes, small factories and fields share the narrow strip of level land. Together they form a fine, even texture that fills the middle of the frame.

03

Mountain edges

Steep wooded slopes close in on both sides of the valley. On the map the street pattern ends sharply where the ground rises, leaving clean margins on either side.
