São Fidélis grew up on the Paraíba do Sul, the great river of northern Rio de Janeiro state. The river shapes everything on the map. It sweeps through town in a broad channel dotted with sandbanks and islands. The older streets line up along its banks, and a bridge ties the two sides together.
The town began in 1781 as a mission of Capuchin friars, who named it after Saint Fidelis of Sigmaringen. The large mother church they built still dominates the centre. Around it, hills rise quickly from the valley floor, so the street pattern climbs and curves away from the water.
