Shafter lies in Kern County, California, northwest of Bakersfield on the flat floor of the southern San Joaquin Valley. From above, the town is a set of neat residential and commercial blocks, surrounded by the huge rectangles of irrigated fields that dominate this part of the state.
The land around Shafter is some of the most productive farmland in the United States, and the town has long served it. Shafter is known in agricultural circles for its cotton research station, where work on cotton varieties shaped much of the valley's crop. The railway through town and the grid of section-line roads both date from the valley's farming expansion.
