Shirley is a community on the South Shore of Long Island, in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. On the map, its southern edge meets Narrow Bay, part of the bay system behind Fire Island. A network of streets, canals and small waterside lots runs down to the shoreline.
North of the water, residential streets spread in a loose grid broken by curving suburban roads. To the west, the Carmans River and the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge create a wide band of wetland and woodland, while the William Floyd Parkway runs south to the Smith Point bridge and the ocean beaches on Fire Island.
