Sigmaringen lies on the upper Danube in Baden-Württemberg, where the river leaves the limestone gorges of the Swabian Jura and enters a wider valley. The Danube bends through the town in a clear curve, and the old centre sits close to the water. Schloss Sigmaringen rises on a rock above the river, and the historic streets gather at its foot.
The town was the seat of the princes of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and the castle remains its best-known landmark. In the final months of the Second World War, the castle briefly housed the exiled Vichy French government, an unusual episode that still draws historians. Today the town is also a regional administrative centre and a stop for travellers cycling the Danube path.
