Ring of boulevards
The line of the former ramparts is now a circuit of boulevards around the old centre. On the map it neatly encloses the historic streets.

La mappa
Soissons Map Poster & Print
Soissons lies on the Aisne river in northern France, in a green valley between wooded plateaus. From above, the historic centre forms a compact, rounded shape on the left bank, bordered by boulevards that follow the line of the old fortifications. A smaller district sits across the river, linked by bridges.
The city has one of the longest histories in France. It was an important centre under the Merovingian kings, and the story of the Vase of Soissons from the time of Clovis is still taught in French schools. The Gothic cathedral of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais and the twin spires of the ruined abbey of Saint-Jean-des-Vignes are its main landmarks.
A Soissons map poster shows a classic French river town: an irregular medieval street pattern within a ring of boulevards, the curve of the Aisne and the roads leaving for Paris, Reims and Laon. The shape is compact and legible, ideal for a black and white print.

Aisne river
The river curves through the city, separating the main centre from the district across the water. Its bends and bridges give the map its main flowing line.
Cathedral quarter
The Gothic cathedral stands among the old streets near the centre. The historic quarter is dense and irregular, in contrast to the straighter streets outside the boulevards.
