La mappa
Soure Map Poster & Print
Soure is on the eastern side of Marajó, the vast river island at the mouth of the Amazon in the Brazilian state of Pará. It sits where the Paracauari River enters Marajó Bay, with the town of Salvaterra on the opposite bank. Unusually for the region, Soure is laid out as a regular grid of long, straight streets, which looks crisp and orderly on a map.
Beyond the grid the landscape turns wild: mangroves, tidal creeks, open grasslands and long sandy beaches such as Pesqueiro facing the bay. Marajó is famous for its water buffalo, which graze the island's floodplains and appear in local cooking, dairy and even the town's mounted police. The island is also known for its ancient Marajoara ceramics.
A Soure map poster balances human order and natural form. The street grid sits in the centre like a finely drawn net, the river and bay open out beside it in broad, calm shapes, and the edges of the frame fill with the meandering lines of creeks and coast. It suits anyone who has crossed to Marajó by boat.

Paracauari river mouth
The river separating Soure from Salvaterra widens as it meets the bay, creating a broad water edge along one side of the town.
Beaches and mangroves
Sandy beaches along the bay and mangrove-lined creeks inland give the outer map a softer, organic character that contrasts with the regular centre.

Perché Soure
Una mappa che ha un significato
Travellers remember Soure for buffalo, beaches and slow ferry crossings from Belém, while families from Marajó remember it as home. Its distinctive grid beside the water makes it one of the more graphic small towns to hang on a wall.
Add a title, a subtitle with a date or name, and the coordinates, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Digital files in six sizes cost $9, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
