The heart of Sousse is its medina, a walled rectangle of narrow, crooked lanes that rises gently from the waterfront. On the map it looks like a denser patch of texture framed by straight edges, with the port basins and breakwaters just beyond its lower corner. Outside the walls, newer districts spread in looser blocks, and a coastal road follows the shoreline north toward Port El Kantaoui.
The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed as a classic example of an early Islamic coastal town. Its ribat, a fortified monastery with a watchtower, and the Great Mosque, both dating largely from the ninth century, sit close together near the harbour. Long before that the city was Hadrumetum, a Phoenician foundation that later became an important Roman port.
Today Sousse is one of Tunisia's main resort cities, and much of the northern coast is lined with hotels and beach frontage.
