La mappa
Staryy Malgobek Map Poster & Print
Staryy Malgobek lies in the north of Ingushetia, in the hilly country of the Terek Range above the plains of the North Caucasus. Its name means Old Malgobek, and it is closely linked to the town of Malgobek, which grew up around oil production in the twentieth century. On the map the settlement appears as clusters of streets on sloping ground, surrounded by open fields and ridges.
The Malgobek area has produced oil since the 1930s, and roads, pipelines and old well sites are woven into the landscape. In 1942 the ridges around Malgobek saw heavy fighting, as Soviet forces held the approaches to the oil fields further east. The hills that shaped that battle still shape the streets today.
A Staryy Malgobek map poster shows a settlement defined by terrain rather than a formal plan. Streets follow the contours of the hills, gardens and fields fill the spaces between houses, and roads run along the ridges toward neighbouring towns. In black and white, these lines create an understated, graphic portrait of a place with a long connection to the land.

Oil field landscape
Around the town, access roads and old industrial sites from oil production mark the surrounding hills with thin lines and scattered clearings.
Residential clusters
Houses and gardens gather in several clusters linked by local roads. This gives the map a loose pattern of small neighbourhoods set among open ground.
