Stellenbosch lies in a valley in the Cape Winelands, surrounded by mountains and vineyards. Founded in 1679, it is one of the oldest European towns in South Africa, and the historic centre still keeps a compact grid of streets lined with oak trees, which earned it the nickname Eikestad, the city of oaks.
The Eerste River runs along the southern side of the old town, and Dorp Street follows its line with a well-preserved row of historic buildings. North of the centre, the campus of Stellenbosch University covers a large area with lecture halls, residences and sports fields spread between the streets.
