La mappa
Strezhevoy Map Poster & Print
Strezhevoy lies in the far north-west of Tomsk Oblast, on a channel of the Ob River close to the border with the Khanty-Mansi region. It was founded in the 1960s to serve the oil fields of the middle Ob and later became a town. On a map it looks like a compact, planned settlement surrounded by taiga, marshland and water.
Like other Siberian oil towns, Strezhevoy was built quickly and to a plan. Its layout consists of large residential blocks separated by straight streets, an industrial zone set apart from the housing and roads that lead out through the forest to the oil fields. Beyond them the landscape is flat and wet, full of lakes and winding river channels.
A Strezhevoy map poster shows a small ordered grid in the middle of a vast wild landscape. The Ob's channels and the scattered lakes give the frame soft organic shapes, and the town sits at the centre with its sharp outline. The image makes clear how far this place is from anywhere else.

Ob channels
Side channels of the Ob wind past the town. Their curving lines and loops fill much of the frame around the built-up area.
Taiga and lakes
Beyond the town, forest, marsh and small lakes stretch in every direction. On the map they appear as open space dotted with water.
