Super Besse lies in the Massif du Sancy in Auvergne, the highest part of France's Massif Central. It is the modern ski station of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, built in the 1960s above the old town in an extinct volcanic landscape. From above the resort shows as a compact cluster of apartments and chalets around a small lake, with lifts climbing toward the higher ridges.
Just outside the resort lies Lac Pavin, an almost perfectly circular crater lake surrounded by forest. It is one of the most distinctive natural shapes in the region, and on a Super Besse map poster it appears as a clean, dark circle set against the terrain. Lower down, the medieval town of Besse adds a tight knot of old streets to the composition.
The area is volcanic in origin, with rounded summits, broad plateaus and lakes formed in old craters and dammed valleys. The ski slopes connect with Le Mont-Dore on the other side of the massif, and in summer the same terrain draws hikers and cyclists; the climb to the resort has served as a Tour de France stage finish. The map brings these contrasts into a single view.
