La mappa
Tejen stands on the southern edge of Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert, where the Tejen River comes down from the Afghan and Iranian borderlands. Known upstream as the Harirud, the river fades out into the sands north of the town. On the map, Tejen is an island of streets surrounded by irrigated fields, with plain desert beyond.
The town grew along the Trans-Caspian Railway, which still runs through it on the way between Ashgabat and Mary. That straight line of track is one of the strongest features of the map. The streets are laid out on a largely regular pattern, typical of towns planned during the Russian and Soviet periods.
A Tejen map poster shows how a desert oasis takes shape: a compact grid, a long railway and a network of irrigation channels and field boundaries, all ending where the water stops. It suits anyone who knows how much depends on a single river in this part of Central Asia.
The river passes the town before fading out into the desert, and it is the reason the settlement and its fields exist.
The historic railway cuts straight through the area. It links Tejen with Ashgabat to the west and Mary to the east.
Irrigated fields form a patchwork around the town. Their outer edge marks where cultivation gives way to open desert.
