Thaba Nchu takes its name from the flat-topped mountain that rises beside it. In Sesotho and Setswana the name means black mountain. From above, the mountain is a large, bare shape at the edge of the map, and the town's streets and neighbourhoods spread across the flat land of the eastern Free State around it.
The settlement is loose rather than dense. It is made up of separate neighbourhoods and village sections connected by roads, with open space in between. The main road heads west toward Bloemfontein, about an hour away, and east toward Ladybrand and the border with Lesotho. The plains around it are open grassland and farmland.
In the nineteenth century, Thaba Nchu was the main settlement of the Barolong under Chief Moroka, and Voortrekker parties stopped here on their way north in the 1830s.
