Thal lies high in the valley of the Panjkora River, in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The valley is narrow here, and the settlement follows it, with houses, shops and fields packed onto the flat ground by the water and onto the lower slopes. On a map, the river and the road beside it form the main axis, and everything else hangs off them.
Thal is best known as the gateway to the Kumrat Valley, the forested highland valley to the north that has become a popular destination for travellers in summer. The road into Kumrat begins here and follows the river upstream. Thal is also noted for its traditional wooden mosque, an example of the timber architecture of the Dir Kohistan region.

The river draws a single bold line through the frame, the road runs close beside it, and the built area forms a narrow strip that thins out into tracks and paths toward the slopes.
