Straits of Tiran
The narrow waterway between the island and the Sinai coast is the only route from the Red Sea into the Gulf of Aqaba, and it dominates the western side of the map.

La mappa
Tiran Island Map Poster & Print
Tiran Island sits at the entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba, just off the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. From above it is a compact, rugged shape of bare hills and dry valleys with no permanent settlement, edged by fringing reefs. The Straits of Tiran between the island and the Sinai coast are the only sea passage into the Gulf, which gives this small island outsized strategic weight.
Egypt's closure of the straits was a trigger for the 1967 war, and the island has since lain within a demilitarised zone watched by international observers under the Egypt–Israel peace treaty. Egypt administered it for decades, and a 2016 agreement provided for its transfer to Saudi Arabia. On a map, all of this history rests on a quiet outline surrounded by water.
A Tiran Island map poster frames the island together with the reefs of the strait, which divers from nearby Sharm el-Sheikh know well. With no streets to draw, the design rests on the contrast between the solid island, the fine shapes of the reefs and the narrow channels that ships follow between them. It is a small map carrying a great deal of meaning.

Strait reefs
A line of coral reefs sits in the middle of the strait, drawn as small, crisp shapes between the shipping channels and popular with divers from Sharm el-Sheikh.
Desert interior
Tiran's interior of bare hills and dry valleys carries no roads or towns, so the island appears on the poster as one solid, sculptural form.

Perché Tiran Island
Una mappa che ha un significato
Tiran speaks to divers who have drifted along the reefs of the strait, to people who know Sharm el-Sheikh, and to anyone interested in the geography behind modern Middle Eastern history. Its compact shape suits smaller frames as well as large ones.
You can write your own title and subtitle, such as a dive trip or a date, and adjust the coordinates line. Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand are all available; Blueprint in particular suits the island's role as a point on navigational charts.
