La mappa

Tomigusuku Map Poster & Print

Tomigusuku lies immediately south of Naha on the main island of Okinawa. From above, the city is a mix of low limestone ridges, winding residential lanes and a western coastline that has been extended with reclaimed land. Roads run along the shore towards the airport area, while the inland streets bend around the hills in patterns shaped more by terrain than by any grid.

The city's hills played a part in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, and the former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, a tunnel complex dug into a hillside here, is now open to visitors. The Tomigusuku map poster shows that terrain through the way the streets curve and cluster, even without any relief shading.

Just off the coast lies Senaga Island, linked to the mainland by road and known for its seaside terraces and views of aircraft approaching Naha. On a print it forms a small, distinct shape against the open sea. Together with the curving shoreline, it gives the western side of the map a strong, clean edge.

01

Senaga Island

A small island off the western shore, connected by a causeway road. It makes a compact, recognisable shape against the empty sea on the print.

02

Reclaimed coastline

The western shore has been built out into the sea. Straight edges and new blocks show a clear contrast with the older, winding streets inland.

03

Limestone ridges

Low hills shape the inland neighbourhoods, and roads curve around them. These are the ridges where the wartime underground headquarters was built.
