River valley
The town is laid out along the Vişeu river and the lower Vaser. That gives it a long, branching shape set by the valley floor instead of a grid.

La mappa
Vişeu de Sus Map Poster & Print
Vişeu de Sus lies in the north of Romania's Maramureş region, at the edge of the Maramureş Mountains. The town follows the valleys. From above, it stretches along the Vişeu river and the mouth of the Vaser, with streets tightly packed on the valley floor and houses climbing the lower slopes. Forested ridges rise on every side, leaving only narrow strips of level ground.
The town is best known for the Mocăniţa, a narrow-gauge forestry railway that still runs steam trains up the Vaser valley into the mountains. It is one of the last working forestry railways of its kind in Europe, and it draws visitors from far away. Logging and timber have long shaped the local economy and the town itself.
A Vişeu de Sus map poster shows a settlement shaped entirely by its terrain. Streets follow the rivers, the town thins out as the valleys narrow, and the thin line of the railway runs up into empty forest. In black and white, it is an elegant image of a mountain town and its valleys.

Forest railway
The narrow-gauge Mocăniţa line leaves the town and winds up the Vaser valley. On the poster it is a thin, continuous thread into the mountains.
Hillside streets
Side streets climb from the valley floor onto the lower slopes. They break the town's edges into irregular, finger-like shapes.
