Western Dvina curve
The river crosses the city in a wide sweep. Bridges stitch the two banks together, and the long curve gives the print its main line.

La mappa
Vitebsk Map Poster & Print
Vitebsk lies on the Western Dvina in north-eastern Belarus, at the point where the small Vitba River joins it. The larger river crosses the city in a broad curve and divides it into two banks linked by several bridges. The Vitba cuts a winding valley through the historic centre. From above, the old town stands on raised ground above the water, and its streets follow the terrain rather than a grid.
The city is best known as the birthplace of Marc Chagall. His childhood streets and wooden houses appear again and again in his paintings, and the house where he grew up is now a museum. In the early twentieth century, Vitebsk also had an important art school connected with Kazimir Malevich and the avant-garde. Today it hosts the annual Slavianski Bazaar festival.
A Vitebsk map poster shows a city defined by river bends and ravines. The Dvina adds a confident arc across the sheet. The smaller valleys and irregular old streets give the centre a hand-drawn quality, and the Soviet-era districts farther out bring more regular blocks and broad avenues.

Vitba valley
A small tributary winds through the centre toward the Dvina. Its green ravine separates parts of the old town and creates an irregular, intimate street pattern.
Hilltop old town
Historic streets sit on higher ground above the rivers. They bend with the terrain and contrast with the straighter post-war avenues farther out.
