Square-mile grid
Arterial roads divide the city into regular one-mile squares. On the poster they form a bold framework that organises everything else on the page.

La mappa
Westland Map Poster & Print
Westland is in Wayne County, west of Detroit. It was once Nankin Township and became a city in 1966. The new name came from the Westland Shopping Center, which is still a landmark near the city's centre. From above, Westland is a textbook Michigan suburb built on the square-mile road grid.
Major mile roads and north-south arteries divide the city into even squares. Each square is filled with its own subdivision of curving streets, cul-de-sacs, schools and small parks. At poster scale this makes a striking repeated pattern, with a rigid outer frame around each block and softer, looping lines inside it.
Along the northern side, the Middle Rouge River runs through Hines Park, a long, narrow ribbon of woods and trails that follows Edward Hines Drive. A Westland map poster shows how a postwar suburb was organised, one mile at a time, with a green river corridor running along its edge.

Subdivision curves
Inside each square, residential streets loop and branch into cul-de-sacs. This softer pattern contrasts neatly with the straight arterial roads around it.
Hines Park and the Rouge
The Middle Rouge River winds through a wooded parkway along the northern edge. It is the one strong natural line in an otherwise planned landscape.

Perché Westland
Una mappa che ha un significato
Westland is where many Michigan families bought their first home, grew up or came back to. A map of these square-mile blocks is a quiet reminder of a childhood street or the neighbourhood where life started to take shape.
Set your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with your subdivision's name and a year. Choose from five styles, and Blueprint suits the grid well. Download the HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional frame.
