Xinshi is a town within Chongqing municipality, in the steep, folded landscape that surrounds the upper Yangtze. From above, it looks nothing like a flat plains town. Its roads follow the lie of the land, tracing hillsides and valley floors, and the built-up area stretches along the easiest ground instead of spreading evenly.
Much of the countryside around Chongqing is terraced. On a detailed map that shows up as fine, stacked lines hugging the slopes, and the town's streets pick up the same rhythm.
