Kalajoki river
The river winds through the centre from southeast to northwest. Its curves divide the town and give the flat map its main natural line.

La mappa
Ylivieska Map Poster & Print
Ylivieska lies in North Ostrobothnia, on the wide, level farmland that stretches inland from the Gulf of Bothnia. The Kalajoki river runs through the middle of town and draws a soft, meandering line across an otherwise straight-edged map. Bridges carry the road network over the water, and the centre gathers along both banks.
The town is also a railway junction. The main line running north toward Oulu meets a branch heading east into the interior, and the tracks cut long, confident lines through the street pattern. Residential districts spread out in loose blocks and curving cul-de-sacs, with open fields close to the centre in the way typical of Ostrobothnian towns.
In 2016 the town's old wooden church, a landmark beside the river, was destroyed by fire, and a new church has since been built. A Ylivieska map poster records the setting that has outlasted such changes: the river bend, the rail lines and the wide plain around them, drawn in clean black and white.

Railway junction
Rail lines toward Oulu and eastward inland meet here. Their long, straight tracks slice across the grid and anchor the town's layout.
Open Ostrobothnian plain
Fields reach close to the built-up area, so the town's edges dissolve into long, parallel parcel lines typical of the region's farmland.
