Abbiategrasso lies in the flat farmland west of Milan, where the Naviglio Grande canal runs through on its way from the Ticino river to the city. On a map the canal is the clearest feature: a steady line bending around the town, with the older streets packed close together on one side and newer neighbourhoods spreading out towards the fields.
The historic centre forms a small, dense knot around the Visconti castle and the main church, and the streets run out from it towards the old gates. The Naviglio di Bereguardo begins here as well, branching south from the Grande. The town sits where two historic waterways meet, which explains a lot about its shape.
An Abbiategrasso map poster shows a place defined by water engineering rather than hills or coastline. To the west, the green belt of the Ticino valley park appears as open, lightly drawn land.
