Afrânio lies in the far west of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid sertão near the borders with Piauí and Bahia and not far from Petrolina. From above, the town is a compact cluster of streets on open, dry ground, with a clear centre and roads leading away across a vast landscape of scrubland and scattered farms.
The surrounding vegetation is caatinga, the dry forest typical of Brazil's northeastern interior, and the map beyond the town is sparsely drawn: dirt roads, field boundaries, small reservoirs built to hold water through the dry season, and isolated rural communities. This openness makes the urban core stand out sharply, like a knot in a long thread.
