Al Mishkhāb lies in Najaf Governorate in central-southern Iraq, on the flat alluvial plain watered by the Euphrates. The surrounding area is one of the country's main rice-growing districts, and the region is known for Iraq's aromatic amber rice. Irrigation shapes everything here, and the landscape is threaded with canals, ditches and field boundaries.
The town itself is compact, a close network of streets with main roads leading toward Najaf and neighbouring districts. From above, the built area appears as a dense block surrounded by long, narrow fields.
