Allapuram sits in the southern part of the Vellore urban area in northern Tamil Nadu. On a map it doesn't look like a separate town. Its streets run straight into the rest of the city, so you can't see where one ends and the other begins. Houses sit tight along narrow lanes, and a few main roads carry traffic toward the centre and out to the countryside.
The land around Vellore is shaped by hills. Bare, rocky ridges rise at the edges of the plain, and the built-up area grows along the valleys between them. The Palar River crosses the district further north. Most of the year its bed is wide and sandy, and on a map it shows up as a broad pale band rather than a thin blue line.
