Aş Şuwayrah lies on the Tigris River in Wasit Governorate, southeast of Baghdad. The land here is the flat alluvial plain of Mesopotamia. From above, the town gathers along the river, with a network of streets on its banks and irrigated farmland stretching out on both sides, crossed by canals and drainage channels.
Like many towns along the middle Tigris, Aş Şuwayrah developed as a local market and administrative centre for the surrounding agricultural district. The river remains the main organising element: roads follow its course, and cultivated fields depend on the water drawn from it.
