Ashoknagar is the headquarters of Ashoknagar district in northern Madhya Pradesh, surrounded by open farmland on gently undulating ground. The railway runs through the town, and on a map it divides the built-up area into distinct sides. Older lanes crowd close to the market, and newer colonies spread along the roads leading out.
Agriculture shapes the town's life, and Ashoknagar is known as a trading centre for grain grown in the surrounding countryside. The wider district includes the historic weaving town of Chanderi, famous for its handloom saris. The name is associated locally with the emperor Ashoka and the tradition that he passed through the area.
