Ashta is a town in Sangli district in southern Maharashtra, in the agricultural country of the Krishna river basin. Seen from above, the town has a dense, tightly packed centre where older lanes crowd together, and newer growth spreads out along the main roads. Around it, the landscape opens into a regular patchwork of irrigated fields.
This part of Maharashtra is closely associated with sugarcane and cooperative sugar production, and the map shows it indirectly. Field tracks and rural roads run in long, straight lines between the plots and link Ashta to nearby villages. The contrast between a thick knot of streets at the centre and the open, ruled countryside gives the print its structure.
