Balapur is a town in Akola district in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It lies on the Deccan plain, surrounded by open agricultural land, and from above the town shows as a compact built-up area with lanes packed tightly around its older centre. Roads lead out in several directions towards Akola and neighbouring towns.
The town is known for its fort, which dates from the Mughal period and still stands near the river. Rivers run close to the town, and their banks give the map a natural edge on one side. Around it, the fields of the plain are divided into a patchwork of plots, typical of this cotton-growing region.
