Bessemer lies southwest of Birmingham in Jefferson County, Alabama. It was founded in 1887 as an industrial town and named after Henry Bessemer, the English inventor of the steelmaking process. Its map still shows that origin. The downtown is a regular grid of streets, laid out with purpose, and railroad lines pass through and around it.
As the town grew, residential neighbourhoods spread across the surrounding ridges and valleys, following the rolling terrain of the Birmingham district. Former industrial sites and rail yards leave large, empty or irregular areas on the map. Interstate highways add long curves along the edges. Bessemer also hosts a division of the Jefferson County courthouse, a result of the county's unusual split court system.
