Bicholim is the headquarters of a taluka in North Goa, well inland from the beaches most visitors know. On a map the town sits in a valley in the Mandovi river basin, with its streets gathered around a small commercial centre. Beyond that the pattern loosens into scattered settlements, fields and low, wooded hills of laterite.
The surrounding taluka has long been linked to iron-ore mining, one of Goa's major industries for decades, and large parts of the nearby hills show the mark of open-cast workings. The taluka also includes Mayem Lake, a freshwater lake popular with day visitors. Together these give the wider map a mix of water, worked land and green slopes.
A Bicholim map poster shows a side of Goa that rarely appears on postcards: an inland market town with rivers, paddy land and hills instead of a coastline.
