Borgomanero is a town in the province of Novara, in northern Piedmont, where the flat rice plain gives way to the first hills of the lake district. From above, the historic centre is compact and orderly, with straight streets that recall its medieval origins as a planned borgo. Newer quarters spread outward in every direction, following roads towards the neighbouring villages.
The Agogna river runs past the town, a thin winding line that follows the valley floor southward. To the west and north the land rises into wooded hills, and Lake Orta lies only a short distance away, with Lake Maggiore a little further on. The town works as a local crossroads, and roads leave its centre like spokes.
