Brejo is a town in the east of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil, in the region that looks toward the Parnaíba River basin and the neighbouring state of Piauí. Its map shows a modest built-up area: a central grouping of streets and blocks, with roads leading outward and development thinning quickly into open land. The overall impression is of a small, self-contained town set in wide countryside.
The name brejo refers in Portuguese to wet, marshy ground, a reminder of how closely many towns in this part of Brazil are tied to their landscape. Around Brejo, the land is largely rural, with farmland, scrub and watercourses shaping the areas beyond the streets.
