Brighton lies north-east of Denver along the South Platte River and serves as the county seat of Adams County. On a map, the original town centre forms a compact grid near the railway, while newer subdivisions spread outward with curving streets and cul-de-sacs, and irrigated fields and the river corridor fill the land around them.
For much of its history Brighton was an agricultural town, known for the farms and vegetable growers of the South Platte valley. Growth from the Denver metropolitan area has brought many new neighbourhoods, yet the land to the north and east still shows the broad rectangular fields and straight section-line roads typical of the Colorado plains.
